Due to its height and the excellent quality of life, the people of Madrid enjoy the saying "From Madrid to Heaven" Plaza Mayor (main square) is the most important landmark in Madrid, officially opened in 1619 by King Alfonos III capital of Spain (see his statue in the middle of Plaza Mayor) set back from Calle Mayor it is an almost perfectly preserved and extremely beautiful 17th century arcaded square.
